I still had to give mine a couple of taps with a hammer around the intermediate shaft where it bolts to the spline on the rack, and a couple near the passenger side rail. You'll need to retain the emissions stuff such as the charcoal canister.

I also done a VT front brake upgrade, VS booster and VT master cylinder, VT discs and calipers, and conversion hubs not the cheap eBay specials Find an engineer and speak to them in detail about it to see what they need for it to be signed off.

You need a fuel pump from a fuel injected car and it needs to have enough capacity to keep up with the LS, i dont know if a VL pump will fit a VK carby tank, a new fuel pump and regulator wont cost too much, and if you end up getting a later model tank VN - VSmake sure you get the straps as well.

There are a couple of options for the dash, you can get the factory speedo converted with an electric motor so you just need to hook up the speed sensor wires from the gearbox, you can get an x drive box from CRS or some other places that take the electric impulses from the speed sensor and drive a mechanical output shaft to use the factory speedo cable, or you can get a Dakota Digital speed sensor that has a cable drive on the end of it.

Or go for a custom dash with autometer gauges with a electronic speedo I'm still building mine, got the motor, box and headers in, working on the fuel system and the wiring at the moment. Dont really want to upgrade them yet they arent heaps crash hot just wondering if they would get past for engineering or would I need to do the vt brake upgrade kit.

Feb 24, 2. Can try use your stock fuel line, but I doubt the flow will be there. Depending on which LS you use it may be returnless. Brakes you'll have to talk to the engineer about, but I suspect it will need to be equivalent to what was on the car the engine came from.

Really something you shouldn't wait to do. There is no LS engine that will make it easier to convert than the others, LS as a platform pretty much make it the same in terms of bolting in, that's why people are able to drop late model LS engines in earl model LS cars.

Steering is up to you, I don't know why you wouldn't go power steering. Mainly I think people go manual racks because the engine fouls on the power rack somewhere?

He has done a great job on the conversion, getting the digital dash working well with the setup, adding extra little features like a cruise cutout switch if neutral is selected, integrated a lot of the LS factory ancillaries to make maintenance easier.

The suspension is one of the first priorities lol. The weight difference in front of the firewall must play on the SL springs.

LS CONVERSION KIT FOR A FIRST-GEN HOLDEN COMMODORE - PART 2

My mate used an aftermarket setup from a VX Commodore which uses the original module. Two of the push buttons to the left of the dash have been utilised for the setup. I will put up a video later, but quickly give a run through of a sequence using the above. Driving along, I press the original button to activate which lights up the cruise light, then press the right button on the dash to set when desired speed is reached. To cancel, I press the original column button.

To turn off, I press the original button once more. It kicks down as per normal and engine brakes, disengages by pressing brake pedal, but as there is no ABS module, there is no brake assist. Cheers mate. Would love to mount a turbo under the airbox in the inner guard later to keep with the theme, will make it a reality a bit down the track.

A late update. I have owned it for just over 3 months and have done a few mods while doing about km at the same time, so will do my best to add it all now.

All the parts were in the shed including solid upper rear control arms and braced lower. The car handles a lot better, more direct and readable. Makes it great as a daily.

Other than that, all that needs doing is some good lifters, clean up the body and go a better diff as the 10 bolt is starting to suffer. Bloody hell, you have been busy. Great mods, imagine the car would handle like new now better I suppose. Just a thought if you are staying with the sleeper theme, maybe dont go turbo, now you have the LS in, its straight forward to go cubes of na goodness, just a thought….

I would not mind doing a VK Blue Meanie replica. One good thing about pre VN Commodores - they're nice and light. Extra power will probabky result in extra tyre smoke? Thanks for the replies guys. I'd be changing the radiator to a PWR or Dessert Coolers or something with EL Thermos The VY one is what the guy doing the work requested so ill stick with that, i have a electrician that is going to look at the harness for me and im expecting it to heat up but will be putting au thermos on it straight away so if it does heat up ill upgrade the radiator if needed.

Hi i know someone who has vx ls1 into vk, he used 6spd man and kept the stock vk diff, so gearing is a bit off but it still goes hard and sounds tough with custom exhaust. Any particular questions i can probably put you in touch with him. Has he got a calais? From what i can see the speedo cable runs into a box in the engine bay that controls the cruise. So if thats the case i have to find out if the signals are the same or if i can convert them. The VK Calais runs a cable to a box where is converts the signal to electrical - I am pretty sure this is refered to as the transducer or something like that.

You may be able to modify the transducer to adjust to the ls1 signal or perhaps the signal will work with the dash - I highly doubt it.

Most people converting efi 5L run the VL onwards power steer rack as it is not as bulky. I guess the VY one might work - as with the VL onwards you may also have to update to the later model k frame which accepts the slimmer rack. VL intermediate shafts are then used to connect to the VK column.

LS series is certainly the way to go - I will be doing that next time. Lots of guys are now doing them so there is a lot of information floating around. A few have also developed some very good mounting kits to suit the VS and back k frames.

He has developed a good set of mounts and is working on producing quality headers also. CAE kits are very average if you have not already heard. They may also have something to suit the Calais. I am looking at updating to digitial guages in mine when the cash allows and for now am using the tacho to monitor speed etc.

Sweet man will look at that thread in SC, I might see if holden can help me out with the electronic signal. I talked to holden and the guy was very helpful.Remember Me?
